2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup Player Statistics
The early history of organized baseball in Canada is closely associated with what is now southwestern Ontario. The first Canadian team was the Young Canadians of Hamilton, formed in April 1854. Other early teams included the Burlingtons of Hamilton (1855), a London team (1856) and a St Thomas team (1858). The Massachusetts game rules (10 to 14 men on the field) were favoured. The New York rules (9-man game) were introduced in 1859 in Hamilton. The popularity of the 9-man game in the United States and the beginning of international play in 1860, with Buffalo's victory over the Burlingtons, led to its rapid adoption in Ontario.
Baseball Canada does not have a professional league that is uniquely Canadian. However, arguably the most elite level of baseball in Canada is at the Baseball Canada Cup, which first took place in 1989. This is a five day tournament held annually and features the best 17 and under players across the country. There are 10 teams in the event, one representing each province in Canada.

Canada has also produced many baseball players who have gone on to play in Major League Baseball. All told, Canada has produced 231 Major Leaguers to date, including Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins, Larry Walker and many of today’s crop on big league players such as Justin Morneau, Jason Bay, Ryan Dempster, Russell Martin, Jeff Francis, Erik Bedard, Rich Harden and much more.
Canada has also had lots of success on the international stage. Canada has captured eight international medals, three at the Women’s Baseball World Cup and five at the World Junior Baseball Championship, including the country’s only baseball gold medal in 1991.
